CTR 360 Review

I'll be completely honest, it has been almost seven years since my newest pair of boots. My senior year in high school I bought the original Nike AirZoom Total 90s and they have since then become my favorite soccer cleats I have ever worn. I am constantly checking on ebay for random pairs that I could buy. They have lasted me all these years (besides the insole, which is understandable) and although I still have them I decided I needed to upgrade. This took me to numerous websites looking for a new pair of boots to purchase, and I decided immediately that I wanted to steer clear of both Nike's Vapor series as well as Adidas' F50 due to the lack of protection they offer your feet. Being a keeper I find myself under a bit more physical duress during a match and wanted something that was comfortable as well as provided padding around my foot. READ ON

Glory Glory Green and Yellow
by Dan Stieber

Manchester United is commonly known as one of the largest brand names in soccer. Not only have they won a staggering number of Premier League Titles in the years since the current version of the English Premier League started took (11). They have also won two Champions League trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson and won the treble in the 1998-1999 season. Their red jerseys are instantly recognizable to just about anyone and they have had some of the biggest and best players in their side to grace the famous Old Trafford Stadium. However more recently, Manchester United has come under a bit of an odd protest.

Realism With King Kenny
by Alex Acker

The end of the Roy Hodgson era at Anfield has induced a sigh of relief from a majority of Liverpool supporters who have never been more terrified about their team and its short term future. With Liverpool experiencing its worst start in decades the immediate reactions can only be described as utter desperation for change and a new sense of direction towards an expected glorious future. The recent appointment of Kenny Dalglish has reluctantly brought many Scousers the sense to smile and be joyous about the prospect of the King at the helm. In a way, many Liverpool fans feel nostalgic about the days of the King thus they are eager to show their enthusiasm behind this late change at Anfield.

Broken Promises
by Daniel Stieber

I'm sorry, I have to break my promise. You see last year I wasted copious amounts of time counting down to the point in which I could buy tickets to the World Cup in South Africa. On the day of sales opening up for the third round I gleefully spent time checking boxes of three matches I planned on seeing (including the now famous "GOAL GOAL USA!!!" match versus Algeria) After figuring out how far it was from match site to match site, a problem arose to me, South Africa is pretty far from California. How would I get there? Well air travel of course! So I quickly started searching for flights from San Francisco to any location in South Africa. Shocked and gutted, the prices were outrageous! And this was 8 months before the start. Quickly my dream of going to a World Cup was up in flames. I never did make it to South Africa, and I have still never been to a World Cup match. That fateful day changed me, and I quickly made a promise to my fellow co-hosts of the MAD Soccer Show as well as my family, girlfriend and anyone else that would listen. My promise was this, that I would never in my life miss another opportunity to go to a World Cup, starting with Brazil 2014. I would plan ahead, I would save, I would beg, borrow, and steal to get there. There was no stopping me now. And then yesterday a great hope appeared in the distance, the idea that I could get to a World Cup match by driving 5 hours south. I would have a place to stay, It would be easy as can be. The United States was bidding for the World Cup in 2022. I was hopeful, I was ready, my soccer enthusiasm that wasn't at current level in 1994 was aligning with the perfect timing of another World Cup in the United States. But then a small Middle Eastern country, no bigger then the state of Conneticut, came from nowhere with copious amounts of oil money, no stadiums to speak of, and fancy drawings of gorgeous air conditioned, open air stadiums. FIFA jumped at the chance to host a World Cup in the Middle East, and my dream was dead, there would be no World Cup in the USA in 2022, and after my anger subsided over this lost opportunity to celebrate with the World in my country I realized that I would have to break my promise.

No Gamesmanship and No Glory
by Daniel Stieber
Soon the world will be a changed place. As United States soccer fans, one of our greatest missions in life will have slipped through our grasp potentially forever. CONCACAF has already decided that the qualifying process for teams in their region for World Cup 2014 should be changed, and it's only a matter of time until FIFA agrees (since writing this article FIFA has agreed), not only ruining the best rivalry the United States has, but also doing a much worse job of preparing both the United States and Mexico for quality matches when they matter. In order to preface the changes that are coming to this qualifying for 2014, we must first look at how the region went through qualification for the World Cup in 2010. Read More...

4 Ways To Pick Your First Soccer Team
by Daniel Stieber
So you're ready to join the growing world of soccer fascination here in the United States, and you have already gotten past the many excuses people give as to why you shouldn't like soccer (hopefully having used my previous article for that). Now you have come to the ever-important moment of picking your first team. Now if you plan on following the MLS then your choice is pretty simple. Choose the team that resides closest to you and you are set. Now with European teams you will run into a little bit of a problem. Like myself, I had never been to Europe when I started following soccer around the world and was forced to devise my own strategies when it came to picking a team. For your benefit I'm planning to stick to English teams, seeing as they are on ESPN every Saturday morning and will be the easiest for people to find the most news about. Now there are many ways that you can begin to follow a team, here are just a couple of examples. Read More...

Dispelling the Reasons American’s Should Hate Soccer
by Daniel Stieber
Throughout my life, I have seen numerous television broadcasts, listened to many radio announcers and podcasts, and heard personally from many people that soccer will never be deemed a sport worthy of American appeal. Our excitement for the sport outside of the diehard fans lasts as long as ESPN covers a stunning USA upset over Spain, or viral youtube videos of Donovan’s goal against Algeria. Now there are people around our great nation that love nothing more then to wake up at 7am on a Saturday to watch their favorite team from England play, but many more would rather sleep in and wait for a baseball game to start at noon, or a college football game at the early morning time of 10:30. This is for those people, for those of whom I have heard spout on numerous occasions a variety of reasons as to why soccer will never be successful in the country.Read More...

How Kouman Coubilaly Saved the USA's World Cup Hopes
by Scott Miller
Since it's infancy as an ideal in the minds of a handful of Brit's, the USA has strived on the values and tenacity that accompany being considered an "underdog." There is something quite magical about having your back against the wall, no one expecting you to do anything other than fail. That us against the world mentality allows us to tap into a primal instinct of survival at any and all costs, letting us achieve greater feats than ever thought possible. It is what drove the Puritans to leave the comfort and familiarity of England to find happiness in the New World. It is what drives every Cinderella story to that next chapter. And it is now what will drive the USMNT to success in this World Cup.Read More...

World Cup Number 1?
by Daniel Stieber
Welcome to your first ever World Cup, I have to say that I envy you. The excitement for this cup has been building for a while now and I miss that little extra buzz that comes from the learning about all the teams and the players. To see the Cinderella upsets and the giants progress. That's not to say that I won't enjoy the thrilling comebacks, or the stunning volleys, to see a team pass through a defense or a wonderful save. I just miss the magic and awe that comes from that wonderful experience of your first time seeing 32 nations come together and compete on a level playing field. In case this is your first World Cup, I'm here to try and help you get started with some tips and insight into what you need to know, and what you should focus on. Read More...
The Rise and Fall of Rafael Benitez
by Alex Acker
In a season that was troubled with confusion and meticulous errors, the biggest offseason move has finally occurred at Liverpool FC where their manager Rafael Benitez cordial resigned and received a 3 million pound pay off in the process. It was indeed a move coming throughout the entirety of the season as Liverpool's form was well below the enormously high expectations that fans placed on the Merseyside Club. Read More...

A Culture of Winning
by Daniel Stieber
Throughout my childhood I have been quite lucky in the choice of sports team I have had and their ability to consistently turn in good seasons and compete for championships. As with most young children in America I was only raised playing soccer, I never watched it for the most part, my heroes came from the major sports in the USA: baseball, football and hockey. Even after the World Cup in 1994, and the creation of the MLS I only had a passing interest in the local team, the San Jose Clash. Being as though my teams for those American sports are respectively the Oakland A's, the Green Bay Packers, and the San Jose Sharks I have been able to follow teams in their heyday, all having usually good seasons and competing. Even when I began to follow soccer I was inundated with teams with winning histories and bright futures. Bolton Wanderers would begin to qualify under Sam Allardyce for UEFA Cup, Glasgow Rangers were are still the team with the most trophies in the world, and Real Madrid has a glorious history filled with European and domestic triumphs. Even my fixation with the newly renamed San Jose Earthquakes connected in time with their two MLS Cups and them having the best American player ever born, in Landon Donovan. Read More...

Loyalty To Football
by Alex Acker
It seems to be a cliché these days that American soccer fans are determined to find and support a European based club that holds no credibility to up bringing or reasoning in decision making. This decision to choose abroad can easily be accredited to the lack of skill that the MLS currently holds as the American's top league remains decades behind from potentially rivaling against any European based entity. This discrepancy in hand leads to passionate and newly found American soccer fans wanting to support something that represents a certain level of greatness whether that be outside the US or not. But hey, can we really blame ourselves for this as Americans? We are born to support winners and shun the losers. Read More...
A Traitor Named Giuseppe?
by Daniel Stieber
June 15, 2009 - The United States leads Italy 1-0 in South Africa at halftime. Then the 57th minute comes and along with it a substitute for the losing Italian side, this player immediately makes his mark on the game by scoring a thunderbolt of a goal in the 58th minute, leaving American goalkeeper Tim Howard stranded. This goal changes the entire make up of the game and to finish it all off the same player scores in injury time to ice the game and make it finish 3-1 to the Italians. Now to Americans everywhere with a minor bit of knowledge about world soccer, this seems like a usual result. After all this is the Italian squad that won the World Cup in 2006 only allowing two goals, and these are the Americans who were unceremoniously dumped from the same competition by Ghana.
